Courses of Study

Drawing Course

drawing.jpgDrawing is the base of all Western Art. To be able to progress in Painting, Sculpture or Architecture an artist must first have good Drawing skills. Our primary medium for study is working in graphite (pencil). Different elements of representation (proportion/measurement, perspective, point/line/plane, light/shade, gradation/modeling etc...) are grasped both easier and faster in Drawing. Proficiency in drawing greatly accelerates a students progress in both Painting and Sculpture. Students draw from traditional prints, plaster casts of classical statues, live models, memory and imagination in order to develop a personal understanding of form.

Course Descriptions

_cours de dessin.jpgCours de Dessin

Traditionally Drawing was taught with students first learning how to copy prints which were called "Cours de Dessin" (Drawing Lessons). These "Lessons" were made so that students would progress from making small simple line drawings to large finely shaded drawings. By studying these "Lessons" students can greatly improve their drawing skills. The co-ordination that students gain with their hands, eyes and memory provide a fantastic foundation that will seve them in any kind of later work.

Greco-Roman.jpgCast Drawing

Drawing from plaster casts of antique statues was the second stage of learning drawing in a traditional art atelier. Plaster casts were used because of the wonderful lighting that can be used on them to demonstrate light, shadow & gradation. Concepts begun in Cours de Dessin are continued and applied to drawing from three dimensional sources. Studies progress from using casts which are small and simple to using ones which are large and complex. By increasing the difficulty in each excercise students greatly improve their skills. Strategies and techniques become more confident while their drawings become both finer and more elegant.

_still life drawing.jpgStill Life Drawing

Still Life drawing increases a students ability to draw once again. In Cast drawing the plaster casts were always smooth, white and only one was drawn at a time. Still Life drawing increases the complexity greatly by using multiple objects which are both organic and manufactured, varying in texture and colour. Students gain more control over the choice of subject matter and begin to explore aspects of composition and design with their arrangements. Studies in Still Life progress from using a few simple models to drawing compositions that having many different objects with great variation. In this way confidence and control are gained as the difficulty of each Still Life increases.

blank.jpgLandscape Drawing

This course is done in the form of field trips to local parks and locations. Drawing outside adds many new aspects to consider as students learn to confront the problems of working in nature under changing conditions (light, wind, temperature, ambient noise, etc...). Two important elements of consideration while drawing Landscapes is composition and the abstraction that is necessary when working with large intricate subject matter (eg. being able to draw a tree without having to draw every leaf!) Compositional sketches and fully developed drawings are made. Studies again will progress from less complicated to more complicated considerations like clouds, water, reflections, buildings and people.

Anatomical Drawing.jpgAnatomical Drawing

The main aspects of this course include students learning the bones, skelteon, muscles, actions and proportions of the human body. Differences between male and female will be discussed. This course starts with students making drawings of the bones and then the skeleton. After this, drawings of the major surface muscles will be made and explained in their relation to the skeleton and the different actions that they accomplish.

blank.jpgPortrait Drawing
This course uses clothed live models for the purpose of drawing portraits (drawings primarily concerned with the head and face of a specific person) Special consideration is given to the proportion and anatomy of the head and face as well as the treatment of hair.

Life Drawing.jpgLife Drawing

Knowlege and skills that were started in Cours de Dessin and advanced in Cast drawing are taken to their conclusion by working from live models. This course is composed of 3 parts : short-pose nude drawing (5-20 minutes poses), long pose nude drawing (3-12hr poses) and long pose clothed/costumed drawing (3-12hr poses) This course takes into consideration many elements of other courses especially anatomical drawing.

drawing in museums.jpgDrawing in Museums

Classes are held in local museums and Drawings are made from the artwork. Along with drawing, this course includes discussions on Art History and Composition & Design. Students will choose what to draw from and the length of their drawing. Consideration will be taken for shorter and longer drawing, compositional sketches, and drawing small & large portions of artwork

_Perspective.jpgPerspective Drawing

Students learn linear Perspective through a series of drawings that start with one point perspective and then move onto two and three point. Aspects of Perspective such as: Vanishing point, multiple vanishing points, rizon Line, Ground line, Station Point, Picture Plane, Measuring Points, drawing circles, and drawing irregular objects are explained and demonstrated. Sudents apply the use of perspective to develop their own compositions.

blank.jpgDrawing from Memory / Imagination

In this course students learn how to make compositions using memory and imagination. Sometimes this process will include the use of reference material from varied sources (eg. Art History, Anatomy, Photographs) but the material is used only to suppliment and guide the students imagination and are not used as direct models to copy like they would be in other courses. Special attention is given to developing individual interest and composition & design.
